Virtual Field Trips allow live interactive conversations between your students and a presenter at a distance location. Virtual Field Trips are an excellent way to bring an "expert" into your classroom. The Maine Distance Learning Project is one resource that allows you to connect with videoconferencing technologies similar to our ATM system. |

A
message from the state coordinator:
I have received a few queries about procedures for signing up for a virtual field trip, so here are some guidelines. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Use the Virtual Field Trip Checklist for complete steps. All trips that are in the monthly suggestions are "on demand" meaning that you can choose a date and time that works for you. You will need to discuss availability with the contact person listed for the trip. You might also use the URL provided to find out more specific information about the organization and the trip itself. If the trip has a cost associated with it, it is paid to the organization following whatever procedures they have in place. The only big decision to make is whether to connect to the trip via ISDN or via IP (assuming that there is a choice - some organizations are only capable of one type of connection). In short, ISDN conferences are dial in and the caller pays for the connection time - the additional line charge is paid as an hourly fee to the phone company. IP conferences can be connected without paying any additional line charges. Full details to satisfy your inner geek are available here. The most important thing to note is that the Help Desk absolutely must schedule the session because it requires a different protocol. To do this, send an email to voc@lists.maine.edu with the word Interoperability in the subject line at least 7 days before the scheduled date of the trip. The information that is required in the email is listed on the same webpage noted above. To make your life easier, I have also attached a sample email in the required format. Just open the file and include your information, then copy and paste the whole thing to an email message. ------------------------------------------------ Anne Perloff
